Stanislav's Parcel by boum Stanislav's Parcel by boum
Meet my newest born: Stanislav. He's to be the star of my next film, which I'll be doing in winter 2008, trying out something new I'll be learning: animating with puppets.

It scares the hell outta me. Yessss.

I kept his design very simple so I can easily build a puppet, since modeling/building stuff is far from being my forte and I'm expecting it to be really hard. I think he's a real cutie, though. I'm in love with him <3 He's the only thing which keeps me drawing these days. The colours are not final though, and his legs will probably have to change.

The funny thing, though, is that although I know that my film's going to happen in Russia, at the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century, and that it involves a very melancholic Stanislav finding a lost parcel with no name on it, I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what happens. Nothing. Niet. Nada. Rien.

So, basically... I need your help.

If the character inspires you, or you have an idea what's in the parcel (if he ends up opening it), etc., please tell me... I'm in need of good ideas. I've been searching for a while now, and I have yet to be enlightened. If I take your idea, you'll obviously be credited for it in my film. Thanks a lot!

He will always be special.;)

How about 1/2 scale? Or consecutively smaller Stanislavs inside each other like russian dolls?
Ugh, I'm corrupting him w/ my capitalistic cravings! :P How inappropriate!

It could totally work. Hmmm...
Gotta get some blank russian dolls and some paint...

I also like his nutcracker-ish look.
The mass market potential is endless...

*sigh* man, I gotta get out of product design!
Poor Stanislav, will be lining giftshop shelves at Epcot.

Hm, he could find it and have day dreams of all the things that could be inside, and then it cuts away with him finally opening it and looking inside.

Or perhaps it could contain a portal to a fantasy world and he'd fall in. XD \

Class!
Beautiful design and an exciting prospect. I can't wait to see it made.
If it was mine, there'd be a music box in the box. Not the ones with a ballerina, just literally a wee box with a crank like this [link]

You should research and study plushies and plushy tutorials to make good clothes. They seem pretty crucial to this guy.
:iconelbooga: would know how to help.

I have no idea about your limitations, etcetera, but here's my spiel.

So, he finds the package. It's unmarked, and there's not a soul around. He's had a bad week, but things are beginning to look up for poor old Stanislav! He looks around again to check no one is around, and sneaks off into an alley to open the package away from prying eyes.

He sneezes. Just as he's about to open it he feels something brush up against his leg. He looks down to see a small cat purring at him happily. A look of terror comes across his face. He sneezes again and runs away, ducking into the first building he sees.

He sneezes again, and looks around to see he's ducked into a pet store, the inhabitants of which are staring at him with hungry eyes. Sneeze.

He darts back out of the store, wide-eyed and nervous. Sneeze. He hears a mew from his side. The cat from the alley is sitting happily staring at Stanislav. He steps slowly back, which breaks into a run. We see from his perspective as several more cats pop out of garbage cans, alleyways, etcetera to cross his path.

He spots a phonebooth, and a smile crosses his face. Hysterical, he tears open the package while casting occasional glances over his shoulders. No cats in sight.

His smile melts from his face and is replaced by shock. Stanislav screams. Cut to his face, he sneezes again. Pan out, we see the remains of the package at his side. Pan out further, we see a box labeled "CATNIP" (perhaps in russian), and a crowd of cats rolling and purring happily. Stanislav sneezes again, and cut to credits.

The parcel should be some kind of top secret explosive that the Russians need to defeat the nazi army invading Stalingrad, but they dropped it because they're gay like that so the little boy has to return it without exploding into tiny pieces.

That's an increddible character design (and animation with puppets? Whoa, I never tried that, but a few of my anim-friends did - it indeed sounds interesting!)

Can't say I have any ideas or hints for you/Stanislav, but if I do, I'll tell you~

like you're limiting yourself to very little this is my idea:

Stanislav is a very sad man because of whats happening those days in Russia, he finds a parcel one day which has no addressee, he opens it and finds a pair of glasses, or googles, or a mirror or something along the lines and they are really birty and you can barely see through them. But around him all he can see is the sadness around him, and not to make it too complicated you can make him just see a decaying tree or something, but he puts the glasses goggles on, trying to see if he can see anything through them *because maybe there can be a card saying: look through this and you can see the world as it is*, or sees the reflection in the dirty mirror, he sees for example not the tree decaying but I don't know, instead he sees an animal that lives in the bark of the tree or something, and then he notices that with the glasses//goggles or mirror, it teaches you to see the bright side, even though the hardest parts, even through the darkest, objects. Or something like that!

i love this character!
i was thinking, Stanislav works in a button factory(or any factory u like) until, due to his clumsiness, hes fired and chucked out of the factory! as he's walking dwn the road, another chacter, a female, whizzes past and they bump in to each other. the other character, runs of, as they are in a rush, not realizing that they have left the package behind. Stanislav, because hes a loving bumbling fool, realizes he must return the parcel to its owner. he chases her, through mobs people, busy streets, parks and untill finally onto a large ship. with out realizing it he is on the ship about to bord off to another country when he finds her. when he does, they fall in love and the ship leaves, and the audience never find out wat was in the package!

the reason i came up with this is coz some of the main ideas u want to use, ie,Russia, at the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century, and looked for things associated at the time, unemployment, depression, miagrants!

please keep me posted or lemme no hows it going, its going to be awsome!!

ps ilove his legs, keep them as is!
xoxo

Wow, that's good but it's way too complicated XD~ The film's going to be in stop motion, so I'm limiting myself to only one character because of technical difficulties... but man, that was a great story. :)

There's probably some big fancy technical term for it that I don't know, but I've always liked in movies where instead of seeing what's actually inside of whatever(in this case the package) you just see the characters reactions to it when they see it. That way the viewer's mind automatically fills in blank. First example that comes to mind is the brief case in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Anyway, he's got a really charming design, I especially love his droopy mustache.
